The Yacht Club That Grew Out Of A Rich History Of Sailing

SOME of us are too young to know and others are too old to forget how the local sailing got started in New Providence.

But out of the need to organise boat racing, three men got together and formed the Nassau Yacht Racing Association on the eastern foreshore below 'The Folly' in the 1930s.

Those men responsible for the creation of the association and subsequently sailing competition on the island shortly after World War One were Captain Harry Knowles, a well known pilot; Willie Hall, a marine curio man and Commodore Skimmins, an American who had built a simple hermit's retreat. Summer Camp 2011: It's over!

[by Brent J. Burrows II] - Well, summer camp 2011 is over- and a great camp it was! Please forgive me for this late and somewhat outdated write up, but immediately after the camp ended I headed off to Exuma and was without internet for the past week.

I am so pleased to say that in just 2 weeks (which seemed to go by way to fast) we successfully had all 10 kids on the water sailing; and the best part is that all of them loved it. In fact, we even had a large number of them express interest in sailing in the upcoming Optimist National Championships in the green fleet and all of them talked about and look forward to one day owning their very own sailboat. 2011 ISAF Youth Worlds - The Last Day Of Sailing

[by Robert Dunkley] - I was so glad to see Christopher sailing in his zone. The winds were up to 18 knots and the waves rolling nicely at today finally 3 to 4 ft. As he took the pin end at the start he and Norway powered away from the others around them out to the left side of the course. After playing a couple of shifts on the left side, Christopher rounded the windward mark in 20th position. In the downwind he lost a few boats and then in the second beat gained a number of positions which put him into 18th position at the end of the race. Read More...

Opti Regatta in St. Thomas

[by Kathryn de Souza] - Two of Nassau Yacht Club’s junior sailors, Paul de Souza and Ben Derbyshire competed in the 2011 Scotia Bank International Optimist Regatta in St. Thomas, USVI, June 23-26th. Sailors from Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Curaco, Canada, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, St. Maartin, Trinidad and Tobago, USA and USVI gathered to compete in this annual event. Paul and Ben also attended the training clinic prior to the regatta to gain some valuable racing technique knowledge and experience.
