Summer Camp 2011: It's over!

[by Brent J. Burrows II] - Well, summer camp 2011 is over- and a great camp it was! Please forgive me for this late and somewhat outdated write up, but immediately after the camp ended I headed off to Exuma and was without internet for the past week.
I am so pleased to say that in just 2 weeks (which seemed to go by way to fast) we successfully had all 10 kids on the water sailing; and the best part is that all of them loved it. In fact, we even had a large number of them express interest in sailing in the upcoming Optimist National Championships in the green fleet and all of them talked about and look forward to one day owning their very own sailboat. Summer Camp 2011: A Busy Start!

The camp is run by 3 instructors in total - Bruce Hall, Chris Sands, and myself; all of whom have taken part in many similar Optimist sailing camps in the past, and all of whom love teaching the sport of sailing to eager and excited children. We have all gone through these camps in the past, and we all have a tremendous amount of experience in the Optimist, which makes it very easy for us to relate to the kids as they go through the learning process.
We try our hardest to make this camp ‘fun’ oriented, while still teaching many beneficial character traits to the kids, such as good teamwork, independence, confidence, etc. We love playing sailing related games with the kids and getting as much time as possible on the water everyday. We also try our hardest as instructors to be as dynamic as possible in our teaching by using a diverse teaching style and very unusual drills and exercises so that the kids not only learn how to sail, but have a great time doing so, and learn faster.
Today we are extremely proud to announce that all 10 of the kids can now successfully sail an Optimist despite it being only the third day of the program! Wow, this is an incredible accomplishment.
The kids are all having an amazing time, and constantly tell us how much they love the program- that brings smiles to all of the instructors faces. I’m looking forward to the next 7 days of sailing and watching this great group of kids develop into the future champions and Olympians of the Bahamas. We feel it is so important to keep this sport alive throughout the younger kids, and that is why we try so hard to ensure they are having a great time during this program.
I can’t wait to get back to the Yacht Club tomorrow morning at 0900hrs and get all these kids back on the water so they can continue to impress us and we can continue to have a great summer together sharing our love for the sport of sailing.
Be sure to check out all of the pictures on our Facebook page (The Nassau Yacht Club).
